Street Pharm

Street Pharm, written by Allison van Diepen takes place in inner-city Brooklyn. Tyrone is the main character of Street pharm. Orlando, his father was put in jail for getting caught drug dealing. It's only right that Ty should take up the 'family' business. Right? Well, that's what he did. Ty knows what he needs to do.
His mom dosn't suspect anything in the beginning, but when he started getting kicked out of schools, she knew something was up. Especially when she found out he was hanging with Sonny, one of Orlandos buds.
"Darkman's in town and he's shutting us down" (page 107)
This Darkman guy is trying to take over Ty's customers, and more importantly, his business. Ty isn't going to stand there and let it happen. He's going to do something about it. Two questions, how is he going to do it, and does he succeed?
Ty learns his responsibilities as a teenager. He shouldn't have to worry about what his fathers done, or what his father wants him to do. There's a reason that Orlandos in jail.
Friends, enemies, everyones got them. Ty tries to stay away from friends outside of the business, and that means girls too. He dosn't want to get distracted and he dosn't want to put them in danger.
Ty is very smart and has a lot of common sense. I like this quote from him, "I DIDN'T OWN NO GUN. Having a gun wasn't gonna change my chances of getting shot. You don't hear about people saving themselves from drive-bys by shooting back. If you shoot back and you lucky enough to survive the drive-by, you still got the cops charging your..(butt)" (page 15).
Throughout this story, Ty goes through many emotions about life, and he wants to find out if his life is what he wants it to be. Does he want to deal the rest of his life, and possibly get thrown in jail right alongside his father, or does he want to make that one step forward on a new path?
Ty figures out what he needs to do, whether that be following his dads footsteps, or making his own.
